Denim Fit Guide: Understanding Rise, Leg Shape and Sizing

Quick answer

Choose jeans by rise first, then leg shape, then fabric stretch. Rise decides where the waistband sits and does more for comfort than any other measurement. Leg shape sets the silhouette. Stretch content determines how much the pair will give as you wear them — which is why rigid denim and stretch denim in the same size fit very differently.

Rise: where the waistband sits

Rise Sits at Notes
High-waisted At or above the natural waist Lengthens the leg line; stays put when seated
Mid-rise Just below the natural waist The most forgiving all-round option
Low-rise At the hip Shorter body length; check the rise measurement carefully

Rise is listed in centimetres or inches in the size chart on each product page. If a pair has ever gapped at the back of the waist on you, rise is usually the reason rather than the size.

Leg shapes explained

  • Skinny — narrow through the thigh and ankle. Needs meaningful stretch to be comfortable.
  • Straight — the same width from knee to hem. The most classic and least trend-dependent shape.
  • Wide-leg — opens out below the knee. Balances a fitted top.
  • Flare and bootcut — fitted through the thigh, widening from the knee. Bootcut is the subtler of the two.
  • Mom and boyfriend — relaxed through the hip and thigh, usually with a higher rise.

Reading the fabric description

This is where most sizing mistakes happen. Denim falls into three broad groups:

  • Rigid or non-stretch (100% cotton) — holds its shape and will not relax much. Size for your true measurements; do not size down expecting give.
  • Comfort stretch (roughly 1–3% elastane) — moves with you and recovers shape. The most common option.
  • High stretch (4% elastane or more) — very soft, but will relax through the day. Some people prefer a snug initial fit for this reason.

The exact composition is listed in the specifications tab on every denim product page.

Measuring for the right size

Denim sizing varies more between styles than almost any other garment, so always use the size chart on the specific product page. Take three measurements:

  • Waist — at the point where the waistband will actually sit, which depends on the rise. Measure at your natural waist for high-rise, and lower for mid or low-rise.
  • Hip — around the fullest part.
  • Inseam — from the crotch seam to where you want the hem to fall, measured on a pair that already fits well.

If you are between sizes: size up in rigid denim, and stay at your usual size in stretch denim.

Caring for denim

  • Wash less often than you might expect. Airing between wears is usually enough.
  • Turn jeans inside out and wash cold to slow fading.
  • Wash dark denim separately for the first few washes, as indigo can transfer.
  • Air-dry rather than tumble-drying. Heat is the main cause of shrinkage and of elastane losing its recovery.
  • Follow the care label on the garment, which takes priority over general advice.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Should I size up or down in jeans?

It depends on the fabric. In rigid, non-stretch denim, size up if you are between sizes, since it will not give. In stretch denim with elastane, stay at your usual size, as the fabric relaxes with wear.

Q: What is the difference between mom jeans and boyfriend jeans?

Both are relaxed cuts. Mom jeans typically have a higher rise and taper slightly toward the ankle. Boyfriend jeans sit lower and stay looser through the leg.

Q: Will dark denim fade?

Some fading with wear and washing is normal for indigo denim. Washing cold, turning the garment inside out and air-drying all slow it down considerably.

Q: How do I stop the waistband gapping at the back?

Gapping is usually a rise and hip-to-waist ratio issue rather than a size issue. A higher rise often solves it. Check the rise measurement in the size chart rather than simply changing size.

Q: Do your jeans shrink?

Fabric composition and care instructions are listed on each product page. Cotton-heavy denim is more prone to shrinking with heat, which is why air-drying is recommended.

Q: How long does delivery take?

Orders are processed in 1–3 business days. Estimated delivery is 5–10 business days to the United States, United Kingdom and EU, and 7–20 business days to other zones depending on destination — see our Shipping Policy for the full table.
