Women's Bottoms Guide: Choosing Pants, Skirts, Shorts and Leggings

Quick answer

Bottoms divide into four groups: trousers and pants for structure, skirts for a defined waist, shorts for warm weather, and leggings for close-fitting comfort. Choose by rise and leg width first, since those set the silhouette, then check the length measurement in the size chart — inseam varies far more between styles than waist size does.

The four groups compared

Type Best for Pair with
Wide-leg trousers Smart-casual, office, evening Fitted or tucked tops
High-waisted pants Everyday, defined waistline Tucked tops, bodysuits
Skirts (mini to midi) Daytime and dressier occasions Knit tops, blouses, jackets
Shorts Warm weather, casual Camis, t-shirts, oversized shirts
Leggings Comfort, layering, movement Longline tops, oversized knits

Rise and why it matters most

Rise determines where the waistband sits, and it affects both comfort and proportion more than the size label does.

  • High-waisted sits at or above the natural waist. It creates a longer leg line and tends to stay in place when seated.
  • Mid-rise sits just below the natural waist. The most flexible option across body shapes.
  • Low-rise sits at the hip. Check the rise measurement carefully, as the difference from mid-rise can be several centimetres.

Rise is given in the size chart on each product page. If a pair has ever felt like it was sliding down or digging in, rise is usually the cause rather than waist size.

Getting length right

Inseam is the measurement most people skip, and it is the one that decides whether trousers look intentional or simply too long. Measure a pair you already own: from the crotch seam straight down to the hem. Compare that number against the product page chart.

As a rough guide for trousers: a full-length hem should just brush the top of your shoe, a cropped hem sits above the ankle bone, and a wide-leg hem is usually worn slightly longer than a straight-leg one.

For skirts, measure from your natural waist down to where you want the hem: mini sits above the knee, midi at mid-calf, and maxi at the ankle.

A note on leggings

Leggings are described on our site by their construction — high-waisted, seamless, ribbed, or with pockets — and by their fabric composition. We describe what the garment is and how it is made. We do not claim that any legging reshapes, slims or alters your body, because clothing does not do that. A high waistband holds its position well and gives a smooth line under other layers; that is a fit characteristic, not a physical effect.

Composition matters for comfort: higher elastane gives more stretch and recovery, while heavier fabrics feel more opaque. Both are listed in the specifications tab.

Caring for bottoms

  • Wash stretch fabrics cold and air-dry. Heat is what degrades elastane recovery and causes bagging at the knee.
  • Turn dark colours inside out to slow fading.
  • Hang trousers by the hem with clip hangers, or fold along the crease, to avoid a horizontal line across the thigh.
  • Wash leggings inside out, and avoid fabric softener, which coats the fibres and reduces stretch over time.
  • Follow the care label on the garment, which takes priority over general advice.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What rise should I choose?

High-waisted sits at or above the natural waist and tends to stay in place when seated. Mid-rise is the most flexible across body shapes. Check the rise measurement in the size chart on the product page rather than relying on the label alone.

Q: How do I know if trousers will be the right length?

Measure the inseam of a pair you already own, from the crotch seam to the hem, and compare it against the size chart on the product page. Inseam varies more between styles than waist size does.

Q: Do leggings have a slimming or shaping effect?

No. Our leggings are described by their construction and fabric, such as high-waisted or seamless. A high waistband gives a smooth line under layers and stays in position, but clothing does not reshape the body and we do not claim that it does.

Q: What skirt length is most versatile?

Midi length, sitting at mid-calf, works across the widest range of occasions from daytime to dressier events. Mini and maxi are more situation-specific.

Q: How do I stop leggings losing their stretch?

Wash cold, turn them inside out, skip fabric softener and air-dry rather than tumble-drying. Heat and softener are the two main causes of elastane losing recovery.

Q: How long does delivery take?

Orders are processed in 1–3 business days. Estimated delivery is 5–10 business days to the United States, United Kingdom and EU, and 7–20 business days to other zones depending on destination — see our Shipping Policy for the full table.
