Best for:
Start with the inner band, since an adjustable hat stays on in wind far better than a loose free-size one, and wind is the main reason beach hats end up in the sea. Check how it folds, because a hat with natural fold lines recovers better than one crushed at random. Consider the fabric: cotton is cooler against the skin than synthetic but takes longer to dry if it gets wet. Finally, think about colour, as darker shades absorb more heat but hide sand and marks better.
Swim cover-ups, linen shirts and sundresses. Beige and Khaki disappear into holiday neutrals, Brown adds warmth, and Black keeps it sharper for city sun as well as the beach.
Shake out sand before packing, then hand wash in cool water if needed and reshape the brim while damp. Air dry away from direct heat. Rinse the hat if it has been in salt water, as salt dries stiff and marks pale cotton.
